Love in Little Ways

Today I woke up to the sound of bird song.  As summer quickly approaches, I find my mind slowing, my pace slowing.  And suddenly the little things, like birds outside my window, loom larger–the blessings that are being lavishly poured out on me all the time are actually becoming beautifully noticeable.

One way that Jesus shows me love is that I almost always “happen” to glance at the clock when the numbers show my birthday month and day.  I’m not a clock-watcher; I don’t look at the clock every five minutes during the day.  But somehow, almost without exception, two times every day I look at it right at that moment.   And it makes me smile every time.  It is such a simple thing, but every time I know it’s Him whispering “I love you.”  Even on the bad days.  Even when I’ve just yelled at my kids.  Or I’m complaining in my heart and discontent and angry at Him for not giving me what I want.  Still, there it is, written in fluorescent green on my stove or my phone or my car dashboard: “I love you.”

Jesus certainly speaks His love to us in the “big” ways: a new job, a miraculous healing, an unexpected financial blessing.  But I think if we were aware of the sum total of all the small ways He’s trying to whisper to us every day, it would outweigh the “big” moments by far.  And very possibly overwhelm us with the magnitude and constancy of His affection.

“How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered!” Psalm 139:17 (NLT)

“Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders which You have done, And Your thoughts toward us; There is none to compare with You. If I would declare and speak of them, They would be too numerous to count.” Psalm 40:5 (NASB)

How does Jesus speak His love to you in little ways?  Let me know in the comments!  It always encourages my heart to hear of His unique blessings on each of us.

  1. How unique Sarah! I love the teeny tiny bouquets of flowers my kids pick for me often. Through their little gesture I feel Jesus loving on that spot in my heart that craves romance. So sweet.
